Moreno Valley, city in southern California, in Riverside County, on the eastern
edge of the vast metropolitan region centered on Los Angeles. A residential and
retail community, the city is situated in a valley framed by mountains that
separate it from other nearby cities. March Air Force Base borders the city to
the southwest. The Moreno Valley Mall at Towngate on the West side includes
Penney's, Sears and Macys with nearby large discount stores such as Costco,
Walmart, Target, Home Depot.
Moreno Valley has a community college and contains Lake Perris State Recreation
Area (boating, hiking, and equestrian trails). The University of California at
Riverside is just over the Northwest border, and the Riverside Community
College has a campus by Lake Perris. There are two hospitals on the Southeast
border as well as a 27 hole golf course rated in the top 100 golf courses in
the United Sates.
Moreno Valley incorporated in 1984 and grew rapidly throughout the 1980s, with
many home buyers willing to trade long commutes to work for lower home
prices.The word moreno, Spanish for “brown,” was used in the city's name when a
town founder, F. E. Brown, refused to allow his name to be used.
